How Does the Nations League Work?
The Nations League is played in a league system that includes promotion and relegation. During the group stage, the 54 participating nations are divided into four leagues. League A is the strongest, and League D is the weakest. Leagues A, B, and C are further divided into four groups with four teams each, while League D has only two groups, each with three teams.
Previously, the four group winners of League A advanced to a Final Four at the end of the tournament to determine the overall champion. Now, the second-placed teams in League A also have a chance to compete for the title. In a quarter-final round with home-and-away matches, held in March, the group winners and runners-up will compete to decide which four teams qualify for the finals in June.
The relegation rules have also been modified. Previously, only the last-placed teams in each group were relegated to a lower league. Now, third-placed teams must face a second-placed team from the league below in a playoff, which could still result in relegation. These relegation matches will also take place in March, offering an additional chance for the underdogs.
Nations League Outright Winner Odds Favorites
The previous three champions – Spain, France, and Portugal – are once again strong contenders. Germany and the Netherlands also rank among the extended circle of favorites. Most bookmakers currently consider Spain the number one contender. The Furia Roja has blown away opponents at the EURO in Germany, benefiting from the youthful exuberance of generational talents like Lamine Yamal, Gavi and Dani Olmo who have seamlessly filled the boots of former greats like Xavi, Busquets and David Silva. Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain has returned to the glory of the 2008-2012 years, and with a points average of 2.50 (3 wins and 1 draw in 4 games) in the Nations League A, it looks like the reigning European Champions are on the hunt for yet another trophy. These are the current Nations League outright winner odds at some of our best bookies:
Germany, France, Portugal and Italy are all also considered to be in the title race, whereas the Netherlands have fallen short of expectations, drawing two and losing one of their four games in Group 3 so far. After an excellent EURO campaign, Oranje will need to improve to maintain their intent in the Nations League A. However, if you still believe in the team around skipper Virgil van Dijk, you can now benefit from longer odds.
What is at Stake in the Nations League?
In addition to a trophy awarded to the winning team, there is also significant prize money on the line. Participation in the league phase alone earns federations substantial bonuses, ranging from €2.25 million (League A) to €750,000 (League D). Group winners receive the same amounts. For reaching the finals, teams are awarded at least €4.5 million, with the champions receiving an additional €6 million.
The current holder of the Nations League title is Spain, the reigning European champion, who triumphed in the 2022/23 final against Croatia in a penalty shootout.
Does the Nations League Influence World Cup Qualification?
Sixteen starting spots for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada will be allocated to European teams. The twelve group winners from the European qualification phase, which will be drawn and begins in March 2025, will qualify directly for the finals. The remaining four spots will be determined through playoffs. In these playoffs, the twelve second-placed teams from the qualification process will compete alongside the four best group winners from the Nations League, provided they did not finish in the top two of their qualification group. The playoffs will consist of two knockout rounds.
