New UCL Format from 2024/25

The first major change will be in the number of participating teams. Starting from the 2024/25 season, 36 European top teams will compete for the most prestigious club title, instead of the previous 32.

At first glance, increasing the number of teams by four might not seem significant, but it is. With the reform, the group stage is completely eliminated. Instead, the 36 teams will form a single league, where they will play eight matches—four home and four away—against eight different opponents.

The opponents were drawn on August 29, with each team facing two opponents from each pot, once at home and once away. During the league phase, teams cannot face opponents from their own country and can play a maximum of two teams from the same country.

The draw itself was slightly different.

After eight matchdays, the first phase of the Champions League will end, leading into the knockout stage. Only the top eight teams in the league table will automatically qualify for the Round of 16. The remaining eight spots will be contested in knockout-stage playoffs: teams ranked 9th to 16th will compete against each other, and teams ranked 17th to 24th will do the same. There is no longer a possibility of relegation to the Europa League.

From the Round of 16 to the final, however, everything remains unchanged. With the start of the knockout phase, the entire path is predetermined by the draw, and no further draws are required. Clubs from the same association can meet starting from the knockout-stage playoffs.
