Tottenham spending - Clubs they have paid the most money to in transfer fees in last 20 years
In recent times Tottenham have often gained the reputation of a club not willing to splash the cash. Certainly not one willing to compete with the other 'Big six' clubs in the Premier League when it comes to spending. The club's record signing remains the transfer of Tanguy Ndombélé in 2019 from Lyon for €62m. However, if we compare spending over the last two seasons alone, only Chelsea have spent more on transfers than Spurs in the English top-flight. In fact, only four clubs in the world have spent more in that period.
In turn some other clubs have begun profiting from Spurs starting to splash the cash for their stars in recent years. But which clubs have Tottenham paid the most money to in transfer fees in the last 20 years since the 2004/05 season? Here at Transfermarkt, we have you covered. Five English teams crop up in the top 10.
The clubs Tottenham have paid the most money to in transfer fees
Coming in at first place is Lyon, whom Tottenham have paid as much as €88.7m in transfer fees to in the last 20 seasons. That figure is the accumulated fee of three separate deals - the most expensive of which was the €62m signing of Ndombélé in 2019. The other two were former club captain Hugo Lloris, signed for €19m in 2012, and Clinton N'Jie for €14.1m in 2015. In second place on the list is Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who have made €70m from Spurs for three deals - with the signing of Brennan Johnson contributing for €55m of that figure last summer.
In third place is Dutch giants Ajax, who have made €68.7m from selling three players to Tottenham, including the sale of defender Davinson Sánchez for €42m in 2017 and playmaker Christian Eriksen for just €14.15m back in 2013. They are followed in fourth by Fulham, who have sold as many as five players to Spurs in the last two decades for a combined fee of €61.7m. In fifth place come Everton with a total of €61.6m from selling three players. Then it's Newcastle with a total of €59.3m from selling three players.
In seventh are Juventus with €59m made from selling three players to Tottenham. They are followed by Leeds United in eighth, with the Whites having sold four players to Spurs for a combined fee of €56.5m, including the €41.25m sale of teenager Archie Gray this summer. French outfit PSG take ninth place on the list, after selling two players for a total of €53.4m. Completing the top 10 are Serie A side Atalanta, who have made €52m from the North London club from three players.
